The thought of the same patterns repeating themselves through infinite scale changes is just amazing, in Intercellular I have tried to capture the experience of virtually zooming through layers of design.
Intercellular
33x27, 2014
The first layer was my favorite, silk painting- I tried to capture tiny dots that would fade in and out of focus.
I quilted it, and painted between the lines with red and orange fabric paint to emphasize the next tier of the design.
The green structure is painted Evolon, which is appliquéd over the quilted base- followed by the final purple macro area which is stuffed with felt.
This seemed to be an appropriate response to the challenge- what has more potential for change than an undifferentiated growing organism?
Thank you for this challenge, Betty! It has been a wonderful source of inspiration. I love your take on it - living, growing organisms don't stay on a perfectly straight course. They always have the potential to change and evolve, drop certain characteristics or pick up new ones. Your process as you created this piece reflects that idea very effectively.
ReplyDeleteWonderful, Betty! I love the perspective of looking deeper and deeper into the smaller and smaller units of life.
ReplyDeleteOh me too! It is a gorgeous piece! Thanks for this thought provoking challenge!
ReplyDeleteFabulous piece and challenge! I'm associating - intercellular / interstellar - I'm reading the book "The Science of Interstellar" after seeing the film.
ReplyDeleteBetty, happy New Year! I love your work and the repeating patterns. Thanks for bringing us such a meaningful challenge. I’ve learned a lot.
